JAINISM |
Jainism teaches peace through nonviolence, or ahimsa, which is a central doctrine in the religion. Jains believe that all living things, including plants, animals, and some nonliving things, have souls and should be treated with reverence. This includes avoiding physical and mental violence, and practicing vegetarianism. Jains also believe that bad karma is caused by harming living things, so they must practice ahimsa to avoid bad karma and achieve enlightenment.
Jains also have an invocation for peace called Om Shanti, which is chanted in rooms.
Om means God, but in Jainism there is no God, so it translates to a dedication to whatever is perceived as divine. Shanti means peace.
Some say that Jains can help create a culture of peace by participating in interfaith dialogue and listening empathetically in every interaction.

Ahimsa or "nonviolence" is the foundational principle of Jainism. It means nonviolence and compassion toward all living beings in thought, word and action. Anekantavada or "non-one-sidedness" is the acceptance of "all positive views," says Savita. |
