TIMELINE Imran Khan is a former Pakistani cricketer who became the country's 19th prime minister, serving from August 2018 to April 2022.
His career is marked by his achievements as a world-class all-rounder, his philanthropic efforts, and a tumultuous political journey that continues today.
Early life and cricket career
October 5, 1952: Born in Lahore, Pakistan.
1971: Made his Test cricket debut for Pakistan against England.
1982: Took over the captaincy of the Pakistan national cricket team.
1992: Led Pakistan to victory in the Cricket World Cup, the country's first and only win. He retired from cricket shortly after. Philanthropy and political entry
1994: Established the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore, a specialized cancer center named after his late mother.
April 25, 1996: Founded his own political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), or "Movement for Justice".
2002: Won a seat in the National Assembly, his party's first and only seat in that election.
2008: Founded Namal College, a technical college in Mianwali. Rise to power and premiership
2013: The PTI emerged as the second-largest party by popular vote in the general election and formed a provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 2014: Led mass protests against the government of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over allegations of election rigging.
2017: A Supreme Court investigation into Sharif, prompted by Khan, led to Sharif's disqualification from public office.
August 18, 2018: Was sworn in as Pakistan's 22nd prime minister after the PTI won the general election.
Late 2021: Had a public falling out with the powerful military establishment.
April 10, 2022: Became the first Pakistani prime minister to be removed from office via a no-confidence motion. Ouster, legal troubles, and incarceration
May 2022: Led a "long march" protest to Islamabad demanding early elections, but called it off to avoid confrontation.
November 3, 2022: Was shot in the leg during a protest convoy in Punjab.
May 9, 2023: Was arrested at the Islamabad High Court on corruption charges, an event that triggered violent, countrywide protests by his supporters.
August 5, 2023: Was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison in the "Toshakhana" case, which involved illegally selling state gifts.
August 6, 2023: Was barred from politics for five years by Pakistan's election commission.
January 30, 2024: Was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the "cipher case" for leaking state secrets.
January 31, 2024: Was sentenced to 14 years in jail, along with his wife, in a different Toshakhana case.
July 13, 2024: Was acquitted in the illegal marriage case against him and his wife.
August 19, 2024: Applied to be the chancellor of the University of Bradford from jail.
September 10, 2024: Police arrested at least 10 PTI lawmakers in an overnight raid on Parliament, a deepening of the political battle.
October 6, 2024: Pakistan banned the PTI in a move seen by analysts as an attempt to squash Khan's popularity.
January 17, 2025: Was jailed for 14 years in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.
August 5, 2025: On the second anniversary of his imprisonment, his supporters rallied across Pakistan, with at least 200 people arrested.
September 13, 2025: His son, Kasim Khan, filed a petition with the UN, alleging that his father is being kept in inhumane conditions and denied proper care.
